Hardscape Installation in Huntsville, ON
We design and build patios, retaining walls, walkways, and stone features that handle Muskoka winters.
Patios, Retaining Walls, and Walkways Built to Last
A patio shouldn't shift after one freeze-thaw cycle. We excavate properly, compact the base in lifts, and use screened gravel - not shortcuts. Whether you're after a flagstone patio overlooking Peninsula Lake or an interlock walkway in town, we prep the ground so it stays level. Drainage matters here. We slope everything away from your foundation and add weeping tile where the grade demands it.
Retaining walls do more than hold back soil. They manage water, create usable yard space, and frame your . We've built segmental block walls up to six feet, natural stone walls for cottage properties, and tiered systems that turn a slope into garden beds. Every wall gets a gravel backfill and drainage pipe. If the wall's over four feet or near a property line, we pull permits and work with engineers.
Walkways connect your driveway to your front door, your deck to the fire pit, your dock to the cottage. We install them in natural stone, interlock pavers, or crusher dust depending on your budget and the look you want. Curves, steps, lighting - we handle it. Projects in Port Sydney and Bracebridge often include granite or limestone sourced from Ontario quarries.
Why Hardscaping Fails (and How We Prevent It)
Most patio failures start below the surface. Thin base, poor compaction, no edge restraint. We dig down 10 to 14 inches depending on soil type, lay geotextile fabric, then build up with clear stone and screenings. Every two inches gets compacted with a plate tamper. The pavers or stone go on top of a leveling bed, then we sweep polymeric sand into the joints and seal if you want it.
Retaining walls fail when water has nowhere to go. We don't just stack block. Every wall gets a minimum six-inch gravel pocket behind it, perforated drain tile at the base, and filter fabric to keep fines out of the stone. For taller walls or heavy clay soils, we add more drainage and step the footing into the slope. It's not the fun part of the job, but it's why our walls don't lean after five years.
Materials We Work With
Interlock pavers are popular because they come in every colour, they're repairable, and they handle salt and snow. We install Unilock, Permacon, and Techo-Bloc. Natural stone costs more and takes longer, but it's unmatched if you want that Muskoka cottage look. Flagstone, granite steps, armour stone for big retaining walls - we source it locally when we can.
Crusher dust walkways work well for informal paths, especially if you're connecting a area to a seating spot. They're permeable, budget-friendly, and easy to refresh. For something more permanent, we'll do cut flagstone or tumbled pavers. If you're not sure what fits your property, we bring samples and talk through the trade-offs during the estimate.
What a Hardscape Project Looks Like
We start with a site visit. We'll measure, check grades, talk about how you use the space, and sketch options. If the project's big or the site's tricky, we might bring in a designer or work off plans you already have from a package. Once you approve the quote, we book a start date - usually two to four weeks out in season.
Demo and excavation come first. We protect your lawn with plywood runways if we're bringing equipment through. Base prep takes a few days depending on size. Then we set the stone or pavers, cut edges, install steps or walls, backfill, and clean up. Smaller patios might take three days. A full backyard with multiple walls and a fire pit area can run two weeks. We haul away all the spoil and leave the site ready for or planting if that's next.
Serving Huntsville and Surrounding Communities
We're based in Huntsville and we work throughout Muskoka. That includes Dwight, Baysville, and properties along the lakes. Cottage sites come with their own challenges - access, rock, existing trees you want to keep. We've done it enough that we know how to work around those constraints without tearing up your whole lot.
If you're upgrading a seasonal property or building something new, hardscaping sets the foundation for everything else. It defines where people walk, where they sit, and how water moves across your yard. Get it right and the rest of your Landscape Maintenance gets easier. We're happy to coordinate with other trades if you're doing a bigger build.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a patio or retaining wall cost in Huntsville?
A basic interlock patio starts around $3,000 for 150 square feet. Natural stone runs higher - expect $5,000 to $8,000 for the same size. Retaining walls depend on height and material. A three-foot segmental block wall averages $80 to $120 per linear foot installed. Taller walls, stone veneer, or tough access adds cost. We give you a fixed-price quote after the site visit so there's no surprises.
Can you install hardscaping on a sloped or rocky lot?
Yes. Slopes actually benefit from retaining walls - they create flat usable space and control erosion. Rock can be a pain (we might need a breaker or have to hand-dig), but it also means solid bearing once we're through it. We've worked on steep waterfront properties and bush lots where access is tight. It takes more time, but it's doable. We'll tell you up front if a site needs special equipment or engineering.
When's the best time to install a patio or walkway?
Spring through fall. We typically start projects in late April once the frost is out and run into October. Summer's our busiest season, so if you want a July install, book in early spring. Fall's actually a great time - the ground's dry, schedules open up, and you're ready to enjoy it next year. Winter work is possible for some projects, but frozen ground makes excavation expensive.
